Clubmakers Association (GCA) Names Michael Moynahan
Western Regional Clubmaker of the Year 2002-2003
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Lahaina, Maui (August 25, 2003) – Mike Moynahan, owner of Kama’aina Clubmakers,
has been impressing professional golfers, visiting enthusiasts and local players
with his expert clubmaking and repair abilities since 1996, and was recently
named GCA’s Western Regional Clubmaker of the Year 2002-2003. The GCA received
hundreds of nominations from around the world for the prestigious award – a
panel of several company officials and other clubmaking experts reviewed all
applications and selected finalists from northern, southern, eastern, and
western United States as well as Canada, Europe and other international venues.
After thorough review, the GCA selected Mike Moynahan to represent the western
United States. Goldsmith Vice President, Ken Burgh, who served on the panel of
judges states, “The GCA Regional Clubmaker of the Year award acknowledges the
best clubmakers in the business and is one of the clubmaking industry’s highest
honors. This award recognizes Mr. Moynahan’s ability, integrity and
professionalism.”
Though he’s only been in the business since 1996, Mike Moynahan has teed-off
with much success in the national and international golf community. At his shop
in Honokowai near Lahaina, Kama’aina Clubmakers, Mike custom designs and builds
and fits superior clubs for any golfer, professional or novice. As he puts it,
“You don’t buy a $1,000 suit without having it tailored.” Additional services
include re-shafting, re-gripping, loft & lie adjustments, length adjustments,
swingweight matching, and proper shaft alignment. Kama’aina Clubmakers performs
repairs for players and tour representatives at highly acclaimed tournaments
such as the Mercedes Championship (1999-2003) and the EMC Ka’anapali Classic
(Senior PGA Tour 1999, 2000), as well as the Kapalua Lincoln Mercury Tournament
(1996, 1997).
Mike Moynahan’s clubmaking and repair education is extensive. Classes, schools
and seminars completed are as follows: The Complete Clubmakers Training Program
at Goldsmith (December 1996), Advanced Clubmaking, Fitting & Repair (October
1997), Certified Club Repair Technician at Mitchell Club Repair School (October
2002), SteelClub Professional Club Fitter at Mitchell Repair School (October
2002), and The Masters Program at Golfworks (October 2002). Mike is also
planning to attend the Goldsmith Master Craftsman Clubmaking Program this coming
October. The GCA has certified Mike as an Advanced Clubmaker, and the
Professional Clubmakers Society certified him as a Class “A” Clubmaker. In 2001
Mike was a GCA Regional Clubmaker of the Year Nominee.
Prior to gaining his professional clubmaking and repair credentials, Mike
Moynahan spent 24 years as an officer for the Navy. After attending the U.S.
Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, he served on seven submarines, a
destroyer, was Executive Officer of a cruiser, received a Masters Degree in
Computer Science and served on two staffs. Mike played competitively on the
Naval Academy golf team and organized many amateur golf events. Mike currently
applies his years of experience playing golf and coordinating tournaments to
volunteering for numerous charity events on the Island. In conjunction with
Roy’s Restaurant staff, in 1998 he established and still currently chairs the
Roy’s Restaurants Tournaments benefiting Imua Family Services (Easter Seal of
Maui). He is an avid community supporter and also simply enjoys the game – as
does his son, Brendan Moynahan, who is the current head professional of The
Experience at Koele on the Island of Lanai.
